Mata Atlântica

The Atlantic Forest of Brazil originally extended over 3500 km along the coast and up to 450 km into the inland. It is one of the world’s most threatened biodiversity 'hotspots', providing a large part of the 'megadiversity' of Brazil .

Human pressure, agricultural and industrial activities already reduced the forests to 5% of its original cover, and the remaining areas are still endangered. This is why the United Nations declared large parts of the Mata Atlântica 1992 a biosphere reserve, which until 2002 was extended over 15 Brazilian states.
